Hermione DockyardBack to the list
During your visit to Rochefort, don't miss the Hermione boat museum built in the Maritime dockyard. It was on board this legendary boat that La Fayette crossed the Atlantic to set foot on America in 1780. The frigate was lost at sea in 1793 and is now being rebuilt identically within the heart of the Dockyard, over two centuries later, under visitors' watchful eyes.
An ambitious site going back through Rochefort's maritime history
This impressive ship, 44 metres long and a little over 11 metres wide, boasts around 1500 m² of sails on three masts. The ship is armed with 26 canons, as a result of 11 months' work by hundreds of craftsmen and convicts assigned to the task.
You can see how the site progressed as the carpenters, joiners and ironworkers pursued their crafts. You can delve into the life of the Dockyard at the time of the great sailing ships during a guided tour lasting 1 hour and 15 minutes inside the ship.
