Fort Boyard

Back to the list

Make the most of your camping holiday to take a boat trip and discover Fort Boyard, the most famous fort in France.

Leaving Fouras or La Rochelle, head out to sea on board a cruise off the coast of Charente-Maritime.

I book

From La Rochelle Old Port, daily shuttles travel out to Fort Boyard, located in the heart of the Perthuis straight, midway between the Ile d'Oléron and the Ile d'Aix.

You can also make the most of your cruise to Ile d'Aix leaving Fouras with Les Croisières Fourasines. Go for it! Tickets are on sale at the campsite reception.

A little history...

Fort Boyard was built in the early 19th century on Napoleon's orders. The fortress was built to protect the Charente estuary, the harbour on Ile d'Aix and the Royal Arsenal at Rochefort sur Mer against the English.

Transformed into a prison soon after it was built, Fort Boyard nowadays owes its international fame to the famous TV show with the same name.

Fort Boyard Visit

It is impossible to actually go inside the building. However, visitors can tour it on board shuttles that steer slowing around the stone building at close quarters.

A few figures

Fort Boyard has impressive dimensions: 3 levels over 20 metres high, 68 metres long and 31 metres wide.
